Later, I even challenged myself to watch Korean children’s programs on YouTube to add to my basic vocabulary.īut K-pop still remains the main way I learn Korean. I felt overwhelmed with joy as if I were a child who visits an amusement park for the first time. I mostly watch food videos on Youtube, so I was thrilled when I discovered a new world of Korean food videos. I could find more fan-taken videos of K-pop performances, eating vlogs, and street food videos. I was excited and surprised by how much different content I was exposed to on YouTube when I typed in Korean. I also changed my phone language settings and started typing keywords of videos I want to watch on YouTube in Korean.

Back then, I just thought it would be cool when I said to my fellow K-pop fans, “Hey, I know how to read Korean!” Besides, at this point, I already knew how to read Korean characters, because I had started to learn how to read Korean in 2018, without putting any further thought into learning the language. I listened to a song and tried to write down the lyrics without seeing the actual lyrics. But instead of textbooks, I decided to do it in a fun way: listening to K-pop songs thoroughly.

I was upset because I couldn’t understand this video, and I wished I understood what they were talking about. Then I found one video where she was having a casual interview while enjoying various foods, that didn’t have English subtitles. She seemed confident and funny on the show, and I wanted to know more about her, so I searched YouTube for other shows where she was a guest, and I watched them all with English subtitles. Then one day, a few months ago, I became obsessed with a South Korean female volleyball player after she was a guest in Knowing Brothers. I continued to watch with English subtitles.
ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME IN KOREAN TV
It started because of a bittersweet feeling surging up inside me: I felt like I had watched too much Korean content - countless Korean dramas and Knowing Brothers (a Korean TV show) - which I enjoy so much, but I still hadn’t picked up any Korean. I started learning Korean a few months ago, even though I got into K-pop way before that.
